This man would be welcome at our campfire anytime!

One of my blog buddies, Elbro, has put a post on his blog, Elmer's Bother, that is entitled "Blue Collar Man." It starts off with these questions:

"By what yardstick should we render the worth or value of a man? Is there anything wrong with being a common man?"

I thought it fitting to honor someone that honors the common man. I give to you Mike Rowe. He has made quite a living out of showing us people that do amazing tasks of an unsavory sort that help all of us out. Mike Rowe often makes jokes about his jobs and describes them as "dirty jokes." But he almost never makes fun of the workers themselves. Indeed, Rowe and the show consistently respect these people for taking on the jobs that average people would never touch, and the show always begins with the following quote from Mike Rowe:

"My name is Mike Rowe, and this is my job: I explore the country looking for people who aren't afraid to get dirty—hard-working men and women who earn an honest living doing the kinds of jobs that make civilized life possible for the rest of us. Now... get ready, to get dirty."

I added a picture of myself returning home from work today. Maybe Mike would like to come spend a day with a school bus mechanic. As Elbro says in the comments below -- blue collar rules!

  1. I've tried and tried and tried to get them to showcase my job, but for some reason they don't think sitting at home on the phone in front of my computer is worthy of their time. I get dirty, though. Make no mistake. In fact, today I dropped some pasta on my shirt with a bit of chicken...what a mess! Maybe one day you'll see me one there...

  2. I love his show. I have had a few dirty jobs to do in my day, especially working as a janitor to pay for college. And then some of the things we had to do in the jungle were not so clean either!

  3. WE LOVE MIKE ROWE!

as a matter of fact, i'm married to his twin...only he's taller, bald and has a mustache...

    honestly, this guy is amazing.

and, like yehudi said, i too have a difficult time getting him to come and take part in the knockdown dragout known as blogging!

  4. Never heard of him but if you ain't dirty you haven't been working hard. I like to get dirty playing in my garden, cutting wood etc. I wonder if he would highlite the process of sealing leaded glass to the weather, a very dirty, stinky part of my job, or removing a big storefront window that is spiderweb broken, a scary job for sure.

Our family is big fans of Mike.
I think it may be because our family consists of mostly men and that means lots of testosterone. Dirty jobs is way cool!

  9. Thanks for coming by everyone!!!

Hey, does anyone know what has happened to Hermit's blog? I hope that all is well with him and his family.

  10. I don't know. I don't have an email addy, and I asked him to respond in one of the comment fields hoping that the auto reply would get him, but I haven't heard anything.

  11. I haven't heard of him either. Sounds interesting though.

I wonder if I'm still invited to your campfire though... ;)

  12. BK -- you will always be welcome!!! He's on the Discovery channel and it's definitely a show worth watching.

  13. Whoa....I missed the picture of Paul Bunyan under Mike Rowe!!

  14. Can you believe I've never watched the show? I guess I am going to have to check it out, soon! :)

  15. My ex-wife was always ticked I chose to be blue collar than white, I guess that's why she's my ex. I don't get Discovery, I have just enough cable access to get internet but it sounds like a show I would enjoy after twenty years as a glass man, I know blood and dirt. I have replaced showerdoors in bathrooms that made me want to vomit and I have an iron gut and little sense of smell.

  16. I am wondering about the Hermit also.

  17. is that a carhartt jacket?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Forget the jacket, nanc! Look at the beast it's wrapped around! That is one burly dude!

  19. Aaaahhhh - nanc - I see you are learned in the discipline of blue collar. Carhartt indeed. The Armani of those who work with their hands and offer their sweat and blood to the benefit of society.

    ReplyDelete
  20. everyone looks good in a carhartt!

my husband and our daughter are hooked on the brand.

i hate coats but keep one in the car just in case. i don't know why, but i never plan to be out in the car that long. our son likes to layer and wear hoodies.

my terrible, yehudi - guess i didn't notice someone was wearing it! yes, he's a fox like me.

my husband says about his blue collar clothing (although he's parttime office rat) that it's "stylish, yet ruggedly handsome".

  21. You are too kind nanc. My girls and I have a ritual of sorts when I'm carrying them to bed on my shoulders. They tell me that I am beautiful and sweet and handsome and I repond by telling them that they are beautiful and smart and strong.

  22. I tell them they are beautiful......

  25. thank you, eitan.

i tell mine i love them more than air and two-ply toilet paper!

when our zgirl was an inky-dinky, i'd say, "YOU are THE most beautiful baby on the planet!" and i taught her to respond, "ohhhh, go on...and on..."

Hi, everyone, I know what happened to the Hermit. His blog blew a top and has started a new one but by invitation only. Frank Family and others, he is trying to reach you but needs an email address. I've sent along your web address so he should be in touch soon. I can't, without his permission give out his address but he will 'get in touch' soon.

  27. Thank you Stephen for the info. We were hoping that he and his family were OK and that there wasn't some sort of censorship problem with his blog. Thank you for stopping by.

  28. Thanks, Stephen. I appreciate that!
