It's Getting Close Again!!!
It's getting time to bring these tools back out again!!! I can't wait to leave all the politics behind and spend a few days in the woods. The woods make the deepest part of my soul sing. I always learn and gain perspective from my time hunting and it is a real source of enjoyment and peace for me. This year is going to be very special. I did not grow up hunting or even have a gun in my home when I was a child. I now enjoy guns and hunting very much but don't think it's for everyone. Neither do I think that everyone should feel as I do about it. (Back to why this year is special) For the very first time in my life I will be hunting with my father this year. He did a little hunting growing up but never really did any while we were growing up. He has never been against hunting or guns it was simply not a part of his life. Earlier this year my mother asked if I would get an extra deer for them and I told her I would but suggested that maybe dad would like to come along and hunt with me. He was up for it and so we are planning to hunt together this year for the first time. I'm hoping that he enjoys it and one day he and I and my older brother will all get to hunt together. Those of you so inclined please pray for our safety and that the Lord of the harvest will bless us with food for our tables and love in our hearts.
did a bear get that tent ALREADY? (Smile)
ReplyDeletePops..have a wonderful time. Prayers for you and your table and your time with your dad. BIG blessings to your time together.
Don't shoot any deer named Bambi, OKAY??? PLEASE?!!
Have a good time. I'm not a hunter but now that I have some property I've thought about getting a bow. Although my wife may not be too keen about me shooting her deer. The truth is though that with me, the deer are probably pretty safe unless they trip over something and die while they're walking away laughing at my aim.

Is that a blind? You can hunt deer from a blind, now?
ReplyDeleteNever mind... that's for ducks. Oy. You can tell it's been a long time since I've gone hunting...
ReplyDeleteIf you're lucky, you may run into Sarah Palin. If you do, tell her cube says hi ;-)
ReplyDeleteHave a great time with your Dad, travel and hunt safely, and may all the idjits stay home while y'all are out there! And may G*D bless you with much usable meat for your families...now, how to finagle some venison jerky outta ya!

I actually have some right now from last year's deer. Email me an address and it's as good as yours.
ReplyDeleteDone, and 100,000 thanks! Dad made some up one year, man o man, that WAS GOOD!
ReplyDeleteSomeone at my old church got some antelope jerky, and let me have a tiny taste...that's good too! Actually, beautiful better describes it.
Good morning, G*D bless and Maranatha!

Good Hunting.
ReplyDeleteJERKAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!
ReplyDeleteWOO-OOOOOH!
rack a big one up. we've never stopped feeding our herd over on the mountain, but it's not exactly sporting to sit on your front porch with a cold one while they walk in front of you just a few yards away...wwwwwwait a minute...
Don't shoot them near the cabin, catch them a mile off in another direction.
ReplyDeleteTurkey would be good too..no power means no freezer though. You'd have to salt or jerk everything, or can it.
tmw
then that's what we'd do - i scared up a herd of turkey on the drive when i went for my morning walk the last time we were there - there was a tom that stretched out could have pecked me in the armpit and i'm 5'8"!
ReplyDeleteI love to hear the turkeys. Our land has turkeys and owls and wipperwills and we love to listen to them while we sit by the fire.
ReplyDeleteMy dad used to take us hunting in the fall. I would just follow along, trying to be quiet and not cause problems. Those are great memories...the cold nose and fingers, the mist on my face, the smell of hickory burning in distant fireplaces, knowing that hot chocolate waiting at home, and the excitement on my brother's face when he actually shot an animal ;-).
ReplyDeleteHave fun, Jason!!
What are the antlers used for?
ReplyDeleteThe antlers are for "rattling." Basically you clash them together and it creates the sound of two bucks fighting. Deer season in each state is timed to the time of the rut when there is the greatest probability of bucks being out and about since they are looking to mate. Much of the "right to mate" is established through dominance which is established through fighting. The rattling simulates the sounds of that fighting which draws other bucks to investigate. Much like humanity, a pretty woman and a fight both draw crowds!
ReplyDeleteIs the object to cull bucks or are does fair game also?
ReplyDeleteDoes are fair game as well. In Missouri you are allowed to take one antlered deer and as many antlerless deer as you buy tags for. Those who hunt for sport or trophy usually only take bucks. Those, like me, who hunt for meat for their family and for enjoyment most often prefer does as they have more tender and better tasting meat. Those who manage the deer herd on their own and usually will take several doe to achieve a better buck/doe balance which causes the herd to thrive instead of being forced to compete for nutrition throughout the winter. If too many deer are left there is a higher rate of those who die from disease during the winter. A well managed deer herd, as Missouri has, grows larger even though (and because) you had a record number of deer taken the year before. And the resulting herd is healthier as well.
