1851 Navy Colt Revolver

Samuel Colt designed the Colt Revolving Belt Pistol of Naval Caliber (i.e., .36 cal) between 1847 and 1850-the actual year of introduction. It remained in production until 1873 when revolvers using fixed cartridges came into widespread use. Total production numbers were exceeded only by the Colt Pocket models in concurrent development and numbered some 250,000 domestic units and about 22,000 produced in the Colt London Armory. The designation "Colt 1851 Navy" was applied by collectors, though the popular name "Navy Revolver" is of early origin. The Texas Navy had purchased the earlier Colt Paterson Revolver and this was Colt's first major success in the gun trade; the naval battle theme of the engraved cylinder of the Colt 1851 Navy revolver was Colt's gesture of appreciation. Despite the "Navy" designation, the revolver was chiefly purchased by civilians and military land forces.
Famous "Navy" users included Wild Bill Hickok, Richard Francis Burton, and Robert E. Lee. Usage continued long after more modern cartridge revolvers were introduced in 1873.

I picked up a replica of the 1851 Navy Revolver today at a gun show for the meager price of $65 including a holster and belt. What a deal!!! It was built by the Hawes Firearm Company and is pictured above. I just love black powder firearms as they are great fun to shoot and provide a one-two punch with the wonderful cloud of smoke followed by the lovely smell of black powder. For protecting yourself and your family I am all about modern convenience and power but for enjoyment and relaxation nothing beats a day of shooting old west style.

I have a Colt Navy, and a Hawkins Plains rifle, both replicas of course. I have them displayed on the walls of my house. Black powder weapons are fun to shoot but very tedious to clean!

I love the older firearms. They are so durable and extremely accurate. Though I enjoy putting one deadly-accurate round downrange, there is still something exhilerating about holding the trigger down and sending thousands of rounds on the target. Oohh...I'm getting goosebumps....

hermit -- you're right about that! Black powder firearms are a chore to clean. In the end it's worth it though!

yehudi -- I'm extremely jealous! I have never had the privilege of shooting anything that had that type of capability. I'd love to try it some day but only in a casual atmosphere. My deepest respect goes to the brave men and women who have fired these weapons to give or protect freedom.

Oh, yes. The Bass Pro where we are has a Navy Colt like yours, and he's been drooling on the case for awhile now. :)

I've got my eye on one of those new S&W M&P 45's, compact, of course. ;) They are sa-weet!

My sights are set on the new Ruger SR9. Ruger finally put out something that's not so box-like. It's a 9mm with a magazine that holds 17. Hopefully it will be successful enough that they'll follow it up with a .45 version.

joe - my husband found one of those (or close) in a muddy bank of a creek down in mississippi with the bayonet still attached.

now, let's talk about golf!

once, we bought this spaulding #1 wood at a yard sale for a DOLLAR about 17 years ago - it has been the best club and i can consistently use it on say a par three and get the ball close to the pin every time, but then almost every instance have to two or three putt...

sounds a little boring, but you'd have to be there...

Yehudi said...

No....let's talk about sniper rifles, fully automatic weapons, sub-machine guns, and explosives...
isn't that more exciting, nanc?

nanc said...

that old wood we call "big wally" has the smackin' power of a nine millimeter - the bottom of it is all splintered and the metal is all dented, but he never fails. never.

yes, yehudi - i love weapons and am a very good shot. i've taken the 832 p.c. course in californistan and range qualifications. i'm especially good at hitting things on the run - i like to give them a chance...hehehe...

Yehudi said...

LOL! That's awesome, nanc! Don't forget to 'lead the target...'

and all this time all i thought i had to say was, "run, forrest, run!"

Try, "Dance, Moohammed, dance! Sing, 'Allah akbar' now!" It's alot more entertaining. Of course I would never admit to ever doing this in real life with a captured enemy soldier.

Ooohhhhh....awkward silence here....

Dear PaPa Frank.
I have found a Navy Colt revolver and want to found out its worth.
I can send you photos and engravings. I fairly knowledgeable in contemporary firearms and the main spring felt tight. rifling still sharp. Action and cylinder move freely. Good condition I'd say.
But of course this is why I am calling you.

In contrast, the non-organic gardener is more likely to use chemically created fertilizers.
Due to the popularity of organic gardening, organic potting soil and
compost are available at most garden centers.

Grab a few bags of organic potting soil and lean them up against the sunny side of your garage or a brick
wall of your home.
