Mike Huckabee

Mike Huckabee pulled out a very respectable win in Iowa today. I don't know if he is my idea of a great candidate or not but he certainly adds color to the political landscape. His spot on Leno was enjoyable. Here's a quote that makes me inclined to give him a closer listen. There's a lot of truth and character in it.

" I have a great respect for Barack Obama. I think he's a person who is trying to do in many ways what I hope I'm trying to do and that is to say let's quit what I call "horizontal politics." Everything in this country is not left, right, liberal, conservative, Democrat, Republican. I think the country is looking for somebody who is vertical, who is thinking, "Let's take America up and not down," and people will forgive you for being left or right if you go up."

I'm not well satisfied with his stance on illegal immigration, but would vote for him before voting for Clinton, Obama or Edwards.

My stance has been that I'll vote for any rebublican (OK, except Ron Paul who is certifiably insane) over any democrat.

However, Huckaboo-boo isn't my first choice. I find something unsavory about how he talks about religion, but then he turns around & attacks Romney.

Elmer Gantry redux I don't need.

Being from Arkansas, I can say that Huckabee did a respectable job as governor.
Yes, he is probably a moderate Republican with conserative socail values. Yes, the two parties are controlled by the right and left wings of their dogmas and that is not where mainstream America resides. We're usually somewhere in the middle. I liked Huckabee as our governor and I will support him for President.

The big curiosity I have with Huckabee is the idea of changing the basis of our tax system. Having our government funded by a sales tax is an interesting proposition to me. One of the largest complaint about illegals is that they are receiving benefits of the country without paying any taxes. This type of tax could help out something like that. Everyone could be in control of their own tax by controlling how much they spend. The abuses I see with this type of system would be ordering from overseas to avoid the tax. Many questions would need to be raised about it but still it is an idea that I could embrace if it were done with much forethought into the particulars.

My parents (in Iowa) voted for Huckabee, but there was an intersting article in the Jewish Review, (our local Jewish newspaper), regarding some comments Michael Medved said on his show...there has been a meeting among the Orthodox Jews in our country to determine who the best candidate for us is...and it was suggested that a John McCain/Joseph Lieberman ticket would be very strong.

I'm not sure if that will happen...first, McCain would have to win the Republican nomination, which is a big question mark. Lieberman has crossed from the Democratic party to Independant, so it's theoretically possible... It would be interesting to say the least. Until that happens, my vote belongs to Huckabee.

Jason, here is an opportunity to put our faith into action and perform a great mitzvah...
a brother needs our help. Please go here:

and read the article about accepting Christian help. I think any little bit would help, even just $50. Please pass this along to anyone you know that could help him. He was a victim of a suicide bombing in 2002 at the French Hill area of Jerusalem. Thank you, Jason!

Cube's comment is spot-on; I was already cautious considering Huckabee's record on some things, but when he pulled an OJ a la, "I wouldn't attack Romney, but if I did this is what it would look like," I got VERY turned-off.

However, if it comes down to Huck I'll shut up and get behind him. A goldfish is a better option for President than any of the Dems out there.
