It's that time again!!!

I'm really looking forward to getting out into the woods this weekend in pursuit of some wonderful table fare. Shooting a whitetail deer is of course the payoff but there is so much more to the experience. There's something exhilerating about sitting in the cold morning air and watching the breath come out of your mouth. The anticipation of what might come your way is electric. The beautiful morning songs of the birds, the playful chasing of the squirrels, the breaking of dawn through the trees, and the sun melting the frost off the grass are all a beautiful dance that the fall mornings repeat and most days goes unnoticed. Not so on the opening day of deer season. All these things and more are relished by simple people who love the woods and sit in the cold in pursuit of whitetail. I pray for a good hunt for all law abiding hunters. Keep safe out there friends and don't forget to enjoy the woods and thank the one who gave them to us!!!

You're going to kill Bambi!! AAHH!!

I was hoping for something a little bigger. Maybe Bambi's mother (or as I like to call her - venison chili, venison tacos, venison stroganoff).

i've got a six-pointer hanging about my yard since my husband and our neighbor have put "bucklickers" out!

got some great photos the other day here in northwest arkansas.

we have a cabin over near lake bull shoals and only get to go there about once every 3-6 weeks, but have been feeding the deer there as the acorns have been thin this year due to the freeze in april.

here's to the hunt!

You're sure right about the acorns. Last year I had a huge bumper crop of acorns where I hunt. This year I can hardly find a handful. I live in town south of Kansas City but I also have 28 acres near lake of the ozarks. That's where I'll be this weekend. Keep me informed on your hunt if you think about it. Good hunting to ya!!!

Run, Bambi, run!!!! I pray you have a fantastic time with G-d out in His creation this weekend, but may your gun jam and the deer outwit you. :)
Just go to 7-11 and buy some jerky.

definitely something I don't miss about Michigan. :)

Have a great time, and stay safe.

I understand wanting to put food on the table... as for shooting and killing for sport I don't understand.. May G-d bless you as you fill you freezers! LOL :0

I'm with you on that Ann. I don't hunt anything for sport. I eat everything that I hunt which is why I actually prefer to shoot a doe as opposed to a buck.

My brothers are big sport hunters, but they don't waste anything. It's a chance for the family to get together at deer camp, across generations, and enjoy the woods. If hunters didn't thin the herds, the result would be what unhappily is going on in Georgia now. The state has had to hire professional hunters to kill them just to bring down the numbers so they don't starve through the winter. Nobody likes doing that, it's souless.

Daniel -- If my gun jams this weekend I'm on the next plane headed west to have words with you!!!

Hermit -- Hunting is a great way to bond as a family. My brother lives in Michigan. We'll go up and see him at Thanksgiving. Their deer season is on over the holiday so we may get to hunt together this year. Missouri has worked on controlling the numbers by offering unlimited deer tags. You can buy one any deer permit but as many antlerless permits as you like. They also offer free permits to landowners who have 5 or more acres.

Michael -- You don't find the cold air exhilerating? And you're from Michigan?! I grew up in Michigan and that's what taught me to love the cold weather. I lived there until I moved to New York City at age 11. There's nothing like a beautiful snow covered pine tree forest or driving across an ice covered lake or riding a snowmobile at 90 MPH across a frozen corn field. How cold does it get in Israel?

Have fun! Hunting- I could never do it! Weak stomach, too compassionate (lol)
I have a friend though who slaughtered a cow when he was in Morrocco.

Deer is kosher, no? Come down to Missouri and give it a try. I read about your trip to Israel coming up. That's going to be quite an experience! Enjoy the land given to you by Hashem!!!

Killing "Bambi" thins out the herd and makes it healthier.

Plus, venison is heart-healthy!

Avi said...

Actually, for it to be kosher, we would have to slaughter it properly which would probable be a hassle unless you want to trap in and then get a knife (and bring a kosher butcher) but have fun!

Papa Frank said...

I'm with ya on the butcher and the knife but trapping is a little bit dangerous and requires me to run much faster than is probable. You'll probably have to sit this one out then. Thanks for the support!

I can't sit still long enough to hunt deer, but put a gamebird or rabbit in my sights, means supper. I can't stand hunt I have to stalk, and look forward to my first elk hunts next year. I am a meat hunter not a trophy hunter, take the small buck and let daddy breed.

That sounds awesome, Goat!!! I look forward to getting to hunt an elk some day. They are such a majestic creature. They taste better than beef and are so much better for you. One day I'd like to go up to South Dakota and hunt a bison with black powder. Talk about loads of heart-healthy meat. Have a great hunt next year!!!
